About Me

Larry Gies is the founder and CEO of Chicago-based Madison Industries, a private equity firm he has built through dozens of acquisitions and rollups across the industrial sector. Gies was born in Mendota, Illinois, to a father who worked at a manufacturing company and a Dutch mother who was orphaned during World War II. Gies started his career as an accountant at Touche Ross (now Deloitte) before working under investor Michael Heisley, where he learned how to acquire and run underperforming companies. He started PE firm Madison Capital Partners in 1994 by maxing out ten credit cards and taking a $50,000 loan from a high school friend while his wife worked three jobs. He has invested in everything from air filtration systems to medical simulation companies, and is chairman of HVAC company Madison Air, which went public in 2026 in the largest industrial IPO in decades.
